Tea Scoops by Samorost

I love to work with wood that has some story behind, that has lived somewhere. It was destined to end but now new journey begins when reworked. This time it is the old piece of oak flooring from our house, we needed to repair some part of our parquetry and this was removed. For more that a century it was a part of our house. Beautifully aged piece of wood living another life.

This was cooking in my head for some time. I was contemplating about using some natural colorant to color the wood. It is always fun to try something new. Here I am using powder from old brick to color the surface of the wood and also to add some interesting texture. I am quite happy with the results. It looks and feels great and I like the clay and wood connection. The brick powder is mixed with shellac and then the natural hard oil is applied as a final finish. Here the poplar wood with brushed outer surface is used for the tea scoop, I think that it goes well with the red color.  

Gorgeous tea pot by talented Jan Pavek. He dig his clay himself, fired in anagama kiln, glaze is from the ash from the fire, unglazed inside - 60 ml. Really happy with this one, joy to use. lovely pitcher

Just wanted to share another oak scoop that I made recently. This wood comes from a giant and a very old tree. Particularly beautiful here is two layer structure and the crack. oak wood tea pillow...although the wood is very old and heavily weathered, top surface could have been polished and looks great...shellac resin and tea seeds oil treated...I am very happy with this one lovely grain on this beech wood

...in the process of testing another wood for the tea bridge. I thing that this one goes really good with this tea boat as for the color concern. I also like how the color match with the teapot's handle, really enjoy using this one made by Andrzej Bero. Buckthorn wood is used here, in love with this one. It is a hard wood and the grain is just fantastic. I have recently collected quite a lot of this wood as they cut down a tree in the near orchard and I was able to stock some branches from it.
